Many municipal races await write-in results

Many of the municipal races in Bedford County’s primary election remained unresolved on Thursday as county officials continued to tabulate write-in votes. Debra Brown, director of elections, said she hoped the more than 2,600 write-in votes submitted by voters during Tuesday’s primary election would be completed by the end of the day Friday, but said they may not be done until early next week. A number of seats open on borough councils and township supervisor boards did not have candidates listed on either ballot during the primary election, while most of the candidates listed on the ballots were running unopposed in the primary.

Homicide defendant held for court

A Bedford man accused of fatally shooting a 62-year-old man during a domestic altercation in Snake Spring Township last month had his charges bound to the Court of Common Pleas in central court on Wednesday. Tico Franklin, 38, is facing charges of criminal homicide and first degree murder after he allegedly shot and killed Brian W. Hunter of Bedford on April 24 outside Franklin’s former home at 145 Mile Level Road. Hunter’s daughter, Angela Brown, testified during the preliminary hearing on Wednesday that she saw Franklin shoot her father in the chest. Brown, who was living with Franklin at the time, said her father responded to their home shortly before 2 p.m. after Franklin “put his hands” on her.

County has lower turnout in primary election

Polling locations around Bedford County were “pretty quiet” on Tuesday during the primary election, with elections officials anecdotally reporting a turnout far below what was seen during last year’s presidential election. Commissioner Deb Baughman said Tuesday afternoon there were only a few issues that needed to be sorted out during the day, beginning with a couple precincts having difficulty turning the election machines on in the morning. She added there was also some feedback about the processing time of the scanners, but she said the machines were working properly and simply take time to scan the ballot. “The one thing we’ve heard about is the scanners taking ballots slowly,” she said. “I think people need to understand they’re taking an image of the ballots, so that’s a good thing to make sure it’s accurate.”
