Population Services International (PSI) applauds President Biden’s Presidential Memorandum today rescinding the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy or “Global Gag Rule.”
We’ve witnessed seven US Presidents either implement or withdraw this damaging policy. While we welcome today’s action, we urge that the Global Gag Rule be repealed permanently.
The Global Gag Rule has no place in international development. It wastes taxpayer money and undermines other US foreign assistance goals. Examples of the policy’s damaging consequences include increased costs due to additional compliance demands, fragmented health programs, and loss of local implementing partners – the very partners prioritized in US foreign assistance strategy. Four community builders two longtime professors who made significant strides for diversity and equity at William & Mary and beyond, along with an award-winning chef and entrepreneur and a Virginia Indian tribal leader and artist will be honored by the university during its 2021 Charter Day ceremony.
The event, held annually to mark the day on which the university was founded by British royal charter in 1693, will be presented virtually in accordance with health and safety precautions around the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be streamed on the university’s Charter Day website at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11.
