Worcester school standing committee keeps self-harm web filter turned off, seeks legal opinion WORCESTER – A school standing committee on Tuesday opted to keep a web monitoring tool that detects when students are potentially considering self-harm turned off, but referred the matter to city lawyers for possible reconsideration later. The safety check feature, which is part of filtering software from a company called Lightspeed that Worcester uses on student-issued laptops and other devices, uses artificial intelligence to determine when a student might be looking up something on the web that suggests they are considering self-harm. In a pilot program that ran at two schools earlier this school year, when the filter was triggered, it would alert Superintendent Maureen Binienda, Information Technology Officer Bob Walton, School Safety Director Robert Pezzella, and Manager of Social Emotional Learning Maura Mahoney, who would then tell the student s principal.

Bob Walton of Speakeasy giving a poetry reading. - Credit: Theatre Orchard This year, North Somerset arts organisation Theatre Orchard is offering a range of free and accessible online activity suitable for all ages.  From drama workshops for young people to creative writing sessions for older groups, the organisation presents a series of opportunities designed to add a creative lift to January and beyond.  Angela Athay-Hunt, engagement manager at Theatre Orchard, said: “We are living in extremely difficult times with the national lockdown meaning many more hours spent indoors.   “Our online groups and digital workshops provide a welcome, supportive place for anyone to join us from the comfort of their homes to be part of a thriving, creative community that meets regularly online – so why not try something different this year?
