Direct News Source 11:09AM BOB MANNING  The Minister for the announcement by the Government that there will be $10 million allocated for the Gallery Precinct in Cairns and the further development of that. This is a wonderful project in terms of the arts, but it’s also a wonderful project because what it does is build good relationships with our Indigenous brothers and sisters and helping them in their ability to get very involved in the arts. That is such a great area for the First Nations people because their art is sought all over the world. And we certainly want to help that become a major feature from this project. But again, thank you for the Government. This is not a shiny thing; this is something that’s very important to the future of Cairns. Thank you. 

Area unsung heroes were honored at 52 Faces of Community Celebration

The work of area volunteers and unsung heroes was honored Wednesday during the New Bern Sun Journal’s 52 Faces of Community Recognition Drive-Thru Celebration at Union Point Park. Now in its fourth year, the event spotlights those individuals featured in the paper’s weekly 52 Faces of Community feature, which focuses on those who have made a positive difference in the community.  Antoinette Boskey-Chadwick was also chosen as this year’s recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service. The award honors “Outstanding Americans who are making a difference.” She will represent Craven County this summer at the national Jefferson Awards event this summer. Past Jefferson Award winners include Tharesa Lee, Ben Watford, and Patti Peebles.

This year, more than ever, Ironman Cairns will be something to celebrate. Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the council was working closely with organisers to explore ways to increase flow-on benefits from the event. Cairns Airport chief executive Richard Barker said the event was an important feature on the Far North calendar, driving widespread visitation to the region with competitors and their supporters arriving. Ironman Group Oceania regional director Rob Stalling said the event was a favourite among athletes. Last year Ironman Cairns was the first Ironman event in the world to take place after the COVID-19 pandemic was declared and we know that many athletes weren t able to make the journey, he said.
