As COVID-19 ravages India, one Mumbai slum succeeds in turning the tide

May 12, 2021 Mumbai – Farhana Shaikh used to recoil in disgust when she went to use the communal toilet in Dharavi. But since the pandemic struck, efforts to fight COVID-19 have dramatically improved public sanitation in one of Asia’s largest slums. Indian cities face record daily deaths, but new cases have plunged in the Mumbai slum in recent weeks as officials bolstered anti-virus measures first put in place last year from mass testing to disinfections in public areas, including bathrooms. “The toilet is being cleaned every day since the last year, as against once a week earlier. There’s soap and sanitizer, and a box for disposing sanitary pads that were otherwise strewn around,” said Shaikh, 30.

Helping people navigate healthcare maze amid deadly COVID second wave

Express News Service RANCHI:  It was the call of humanity that prodded businessman Babu Khan (36) to reach out to Covid patients swarming the Sadar Hospital at Hazaribagh here, desperately looking for hospital and medical assistance. He found them in panic as they did not know how to get hospital beds or an oxygen cylinder or how to approach a doctor in case of an emergency, and decided to offer help. Twenty-two days and 175 cured patients later, Babu continues his selfless service, even giving up the warmth and comfort of his family during the holy month of Ramzan.  “I assist the needy in all ways possible. From getting beds to securing oxygen to arranging free medicine for the needy, I do everything in my power,” Babu said.
