Everything is woke, everywhere is woke, everything is confused, as we unlearn all that humans have learned over the past millennia.
Except
Godzilla vs. Kong. The new kaiju flick from Warner/Legendary isn’t woke. It isn’t political at all (though I’m sure someone somewhere is complaining about cultural appropriation since Godzilla was originally Gojira, created by a Japanese special effects creator who, for what it’s worth, was a Christian in a deeply non-Christian country).
The film’s total lack of cultural comment is a welcome change of pace in a time when even baseball has given way to America’s new pastime: dividing the nation and destroying ourselves.
Godzilla Vs. Kong is
the sort of big screen special effects slugfest that draws all sorts of folks to the biggest screens they can find for Easter: kids, cretins, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. But Warner Bros. has responded to the pandemic by collapsing the window between theaters where open and home screens on HBO. It says something about the film that how this holiday weekend shakes out is more exciting than how the critters do. Our film critic Harlan Jacobson sits down with the monsters.

Confession: I don’t have a clue how to unpack the idiotic plot of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the fourth feature in the ongoing MonsterVerse series, but I don’t care. You won’t either. Whether you catch this monster mash in theaters or on HBO Max the bigger the screen the better the clash of these titans is spectacular in every sense of the word.
