The crowd at Parkview Field on Saturday night was 40% larger than any other this season and it made its presence felt many times during an eventual 8-6 TinCaps loss to the Great Lakes Loons. The gathering at the downtown stadium will be even larger tonight as America celebrates its 245th birthday; the TinCaps are hosting their traditional Fourth of July game. Just two nights after more than 10,000 fans packed Memorial Coliseum to watch the Komets win the Kelly Cup, the TinCaps are expecting in excess of 7,000 fans at their game tonight. It has been a banner week for Fort Wayne sports fandom. A reminder: first pitch is at 6:05 p.m. tonight, rather than the usual 7:05.

It has been a difficult couple of nights for the TinCaps, who have let leads get away in the late innings in back-to-back losses. The offense woke up in Friday s matchup, exploding for seven runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings, but some shoddy defense from the TinCaps opened the door for the Loons and they roared back to win 10-9. Fort Wayne committed four errors in the game.
The TinCaps will try to bounce back from that back-breaking defeat with their manager back in the dugout. Anthony Contreras was ejected in the fifth inning Friday for arguing with the base umpire following a check-swing call that went against Fort Wayne and led to a three-run homer later in the at-bat. Contreras was as angry as I ve ever seen him and hitting coach Jonathan Mathews managed the rest of the game. Mathews said afterward he thought the ejection was well-timed to wake up the TinCaps. The TinCaps overcame two separate deficits and won 6-5 in 11 innings in the opener of a six-game series against the Great Lakes Loons tonight at Parkview Field.
How it Happened
The teams were deadlocked at 4 after regulation innings, leading to the TinCaps second extra-inning contest of the season. Neither team was able to push across a run in the 10th – Carter Loewen struck out two for Fort Wayne in retiring the side in order and the TinCaps rally was stifled when free runner Jawuan Harris was thrown out trying to steal third – making it the longest game for Fort Wayne in 2021.
