Regional board reverses denial of Bobby Jones wetland grant | Sarasota

Leaders plan major overhaul to north Sarasota County athletic facilities | Sarasota

1 month ago Share Four north county athletic facilities will see major improvements at an estimated cost of $117 million over the next three to seven years. Sarasota County leaders are hoping to take a cue from the “Field of Dreams” playbook as they look to revamp north county athletic facilities in the hopes of delivering a sports tourism home run. Because failing infrastructure and a shortage of facilities, the county is planning a major overhaul of four recreational and youth sports parks. County leaders hope the new project will help fit into a master plan to improve the area’s destination sports complexes, destination playgrounds and sports tourism.

Mask policy to expire June 30 for Sarasota schools

The Sarasota County School Board took steps on Tuesday toward assuring families that officials expect the next school year will be a return to normal and that they plan to allow several COVID-19-related policies to expire.  The School Board will allow a policy requiring students to wear masks for the majority of the day and to sit behind a tri-fold desk shield during a “mask break” to end on June 30. Next school year the district will no longer ask teachers to provide concurrent learning, teaching students both in person and remotely at the same time via web cameras.   The district will ask teachers to develop plans for how students can continue learning next year if they have to go into quarantine, without relying on the concurrent learning model, which has been widely panned by teachers, administrators and parents.

Florida water manager denies Bobby Jones water quality project

SARASOTA Sarasota’s own representative on a state board that manages regional water resources recently voted against a $1.5 million grant targeted for a crucial wetland redevelopment project at Bobby Jones Golf Course.   The denial was “highly unusual and something I never experienced in my 27 years of public service,” said Sarasota City Manager Marlon Brown in an email to city commissioners and staff informing them of the decision.   In a 2-1 subcommittee vote last week, Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board Vice Chairman Joel Schleicher voted to deny the city’s request that the district contribute half of the $3 million construction cost to build an 18-acre wetland treatment system next to the municipal course.

City of Sarasota looks to hire private management company for Bobby Jones

SARASOTA For years, private groups have offered the city of Sarasota a deal that they said would stem the red ink from the beleaguered city-owned Bobby Jones Golf Club. For years, the city’s administration rejected them.  But that may change after a majority of city commissioners said on Monday that they want to finally consider bringing in an outside firm to operate Bobby Jones.  Implicit in the negotiations is a hope that the management company would shoulder some of the cost of an $11.5 million renovation project for the facility. While some commissioners were open to the idea of allowing the company to alter designs of the course, it doesn t appear likely at these early stages.
