After much discussion and confusion Monday night, the Waldo City Council voted to appoint a mayor out of applicants who will be responding to advertising for the position before the January 11 council meeting.
The council had the option to appoint a mayor or have a special election, said City Attorney Ashley Moritz. A special election this March would cost the city $2,000.
Waldo needs a new mayor because Mayor Ken Haupt resigned last month citing health reasons, making city recorder Darla Longino the mayor pro tem until 2021.
Longino will be handling the letter of intent to describe what attributes the council is looking for and will be in charge of sending them to news media.
