New research by the NZ Alcohol Beverages Council (NZABC) shows perception is not reality when it comes to what Kiwis think about the way we drink

“Although 58% (up 19% from last year) of those surveyed agreed the majority of New Zealanders drink moderately and responsibly, close to a third (29%) still think we don’t – even though official statistics clearly show the vast majority (80%) of Kiwis drink in a moderate way,” says Bridget MacDonald, NZABC’s Executive Director.[i][ii]

The forecast for this summer is hazy beers,
spritely spritzers, lighter wines, and a sip and savour
approach to spirits and luxe liqueurs says the NZ Alcohol
Beverages Council (NZABC), and there is an abundance of
options for those looking for that ‘better for me’
beverage with low alcohol, sugar or carbs.

The alcohol industry has hit back at calls for greater restrictions on how its product is advertised, saying there s no evidence advertising increases consumption.
Nor is it targeting people aged under the legal drinking age, says the NZ Alcohol Beverages Council (NZABC), despite Broadcasting Minister Kris Faafoi saying there s been a noticeable increase in alcohol adverts on social media this year.
A number of groups - including the New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA), Alcohol Healthwatch, Hāpai te Hauora Māori Public Health and the Cancer Society want the Government to tighten legislation around alcohol marketing, saying a recent update to the advertising industry s self-imposed regulations aren t good enough.
