Volunteers spread the Catholic faith in remote areas to be rewarded by more than mere money
Shilpi Das’ life has been divided into two segments for more than 10 years now.
The 33-year-old Catholic mother of two from a village under Queen of Fatima Church in Bangladesh s Thakurgaon district looks after her family with her husband. She is also a catechist who travels to remote villages near the Indian border.
Dinajpur Diocese has about 100 full-time and volunteer catechists. Shilpi became one of them against the will of her farmer husband. She gets only travel costs as an honorary monthly payment for a host of services she renders as a volunteer catechist.

Ash Wednesday, which marked the first day of Lent, looked a little different this year because of the pandemic.
At St. Bridget’s Church in Maynard, part of Ascension Parish, which also includes Our Lady of Fatima Church in Sudbury, parishioners were asked to drive up to receive their ashes following a 12 p.m. Mass that was held in person and online. Similar events were held throughout the day at Our Lady of Fatima.
Fr. Paul Soper is a member of Cardinal Sean O Malley s pandemic response team, which helps create cleaning and distancing protocols for Catholic churches.
Soper told WCVB, the Beacon-Villager’s news partner, that rather than sticking their thumb in a small bowl filled with ashes and putting it on the person’s forehead, churches could either use individual swabs to spread ashes or institute a no-contact method.
