In a U-turn, the US has said the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Nimitz (CVN-68), along with its strike group will remain deployed in the Middle East in the wake of threats from Iran. The latest order comes within 96 hours of the Pentagon calling the carrier back home.
Earlier, US Acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller had thanked the 5,000 sailors of the USS Nimitz and the Marines of its strike group for their work and told them to return home.
The carrier, its embarked air wing, and its escorts have remained deployed in the US Central Command since June of last year.

The carrier strike group spent the holidays in the distant waters and marked the New Year off the coast of Somalia to support the repositioning of about seven hundred U.S. troops to other countries in Africa. It could now be a while longer before it sails away from the region.

The US has seen increasing indications that Iran could be planning an attack against American forces or interests in the Middle East, according to a U.S. official.
The US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, acknowledged that reading Iran’s intentions was “difficult and at times unpredictable.”
But the indications are being taken seriously, the official said. The one-year anniversary of the U.S. killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani is just days away.
Soleimani was killed in a U.S. dronestrike in Iraq on Jan. 3, 2020, in what the Defense Department characterized as a defensive action because it alleged the leader of Iran s Quds Force was developing plans to attack Americans. Iran launched missiles against U.S. forces in Iraq in response to the killing days later.
