TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen told emissaries visiting at U.S. President Joe Biden’s request on Thursday that the island would work with the United States to deter threats from Chinese military activities.
Former senior U.S. officials, including former U.S. Senator Chris Dodd and former Deputy Secretaries of State Richard Armitage and James Steinberg, are visiting Taipei in a trip to signal Biden’s commitment to Taiwan and its democracy.
Tsai told the U.S. delegation in a meeting at the Presidential Office that Chinese military activities in the region have threatened regional peace and stability.

Taipei, April 15 (CNA) The head of the military s top research unit said Thursday that a new generation of indigenous fighter jets is currently under development, with the engine and overall design expected to be finalized in 2024.
Art Chang (張忠誠), president of the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, made the comments during an appearance at the Legislature, along with Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正).
Responding to a question from Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker Tsai Shih-ying (蔡適應), Chang said the new jets are in the first stage of development, which consists of parallel work on the engine and overall design.

He added the was âstronger than everâ and that the visit was to reaffirm Bidenâs commitment to the island.
Tsai also told the delegation that Taiwan looked forward to resuming trade talks with the US as soon as possible. Taipei has long sought a free trade deal with Washington.

Taiwan is Chinaâs most sensitive territorial issue and a major source of contention with Washington, which is required by US law to provide the island with the means to defend itself.

Taiwan has complained over the last few months about almost daily missions by Chinaâs air force near its air defence identification zone (ADIZ). Twenty-five Chinese aircraft, including fighters and nuclear-capable bombers, entered the zone on Monday in the largest reported incursion to date.
