Jackson County Senior Centers not open yet, but hope to soon

Scottsboro Senior Center has long been a place where senior citizens can socialize and enjoy activities. When COVID-19 began to make its way stateside, senior citizens were immediately placed near the top in vulnerability and measures needed to be taken to ensure their safety. While Gov. Kay Ivey’s Safer Apart order allows for senior centers across Alabama to re-open beginning Monday, April 19, the seven senior centers in Jackson County will remain closed for the time being. In a press release, Jackson County Nutrition Coordinator Linda Larcom of the Jackson County Council on Aging cited that while senior centers are allowed to re-open, the guidelines for re-opening “are so restrictive” that Jackson County Senior Centers decided to remain closed for the time being.

Alabama mask order ends, mask burnin begins | Opinion

This is an opinion cartoon. We’re all burned out. But it’s too early to celebrate. Alabama’s mask order expires [Friday] at 5:00 p.m. Not because we’ve crossed the COVID finish line. Not because we’re out of the coronavirus woods. Because Gov. Kay Ivey thinks we can be trusted to enter into the Safer Apart portion of the state’s COVID plan, which relies on ‘personal responsibility’ and ‘common sense.’ The governor urges all citizens to continue to wear face masks in public and do the social distancing thing. She may as well be speaking in tongues.

Alabama senior centers given the clear to open

Following Governor Kay Ivey’s recent Safer Apart order on April 7, 2021, the Alabama Department of Senior Services announced on Monday Alabama senior centers may resume indoor activities starting April 19.  However, the decision to allow activities at the senior center was left to be made by each municipality s senior center manager. For example, a municipality may not have the resources, staffing or may otherwise be unprepared to reopen for activities.  Moreover, the Department of Senior Services has issued various guidelines for indoor activities in accordance with Gov. Ivey’s State Health Order.  DeKalb County Transportation and Council on Aging Director Emily McCamy said they received 42 pages of guidelines on Monday for review before reopening.
