U.S. Ambassador to Rwanda Peter H. Vrooman recognized four Rwandan Women of Courage Thursday at a special Women’s History Month virtual panel discussion highlighting advocates for persons with disabilities. The women honored include:
Donatilla Kanimba, Executive Director, Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB)
Christine Mukeshimana, Founder, Help for Disabled and Vulnerable Children (HDVC)
Agnes Mukashyaka, Founder, Izere Mubyeyi Center
Gaudence Mushimiyimana, Co-founder and Executive Director, Rwanda Organization of Women with Disabilities (UNABU)
Since 2015, the U.S. Embassy in Kigali has helped recognize and celebrate Rwandan Women of Courage who are making a real difference in their communities. Sixteen (16) inspiring women have been honored to date for demonstrating exceptional courage, strength, and leadership in advocating for social justice and the most vulnerable members of society.

The project was designed to offer a holistic package to children and youth as opposed to offering interventions in silos. Thus in responding to SRH and HIV issues the project designed the project into inter depended thematic areas and these were; education, health and nutrition, Household Economic Strengthening, Psycho-social support and care, Gender Based Violence, Child Protection. The project recognised that girls and boys have multifaceted challenges and needs which cannot be addressed by offering a single service in silo.
The aim of this project is to enhance the capacity of communities and local service providers to sustainably care for vulnerable children and families and to strengthen the capacity of vulnerable households to sustainably care for children. It also opts to strengthen the capacity of the social services system to care for vulnerable children.

NEW YORK, Mar 11 2021 - As the world marks the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic on 11 March 2021, initial progress reports on Education Cannot Wait’s (ECW) COVID-19 emergency responses to date show that the Fund and its partners have already reached over 9 million vulnerable girls and boys in the midst of the worst education crisis of our lifetime.
Within days of the declaration of the pandemic one year ago, ECW rapidly allocated $23 million in COVID-19 emergency grants to support continuous access to learning opportunities and to protect the health and wellbeing of girls and boys living in emergencies and protracted crises.
