A YOUNG woman who spat in a police officer s face after they attempted to check on her wellbeing has avoided being sent to jail. Hollie Hepburn, 25, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court in relation to two separate matters on Thursday. On April 15 last year, officers were called regarding an ongoing disturbance at around 11.40pm. A MAN who claimed £10,000 in benefits he was not entitled to has been spared a prison sentence. Stephen McHugh pleaded guilty to failing to notify South Lanarkshire Council that he had a change in circumstances that he knew would affect his entitlement to his housing benefits. Between July 2014 and July 2019, McHugh did not declare that he had inherited £16,000 and therefore obtained housing benefit to the value of £10,000 to which he was not entitled to. The 42-year-old appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday to be sentenced. A MAN who held the flame of a lighter to his neighbour’s door has been ordered to carry out unpaid work within the community. Mustapha Bakar appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday after previously pleading guilty to the offence on January 25 last year. The 34-year-old held the gas lighter to the spy hole of a door on Goyle Avenue, Drumchapel. The procurator fiscal depute said: “Two witnesses were within their home address. At this time, they saw the accused outside the common close. “He left and they did not see the accused again. Later in the day, one of the witnesses had been lying in bed at around 3.30pm. He left his bed and walked into the hallway and noticed something wrong with a camera that was attached to the peep hole.
Banned driver caught behind the wheel tried to punch police officer
A DISQUALIFIED driver who was caught behind the wheel tried to punch a police officer who was arresting him. Christopher Stirling, 39, was caught driving a van on Calder Street in Govanhill on March 31 last year. He previously pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified and to repeatedly attempting to assault an officer by punching him on the head and body. On Thursday, he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court to be sentenced. The procurator fiscal depute said: “Police officers on patrol within a marked vehicle observed a white Ford Transit van travelling towards them.
Lakshmi Vetriselvan, 22, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court after targeting the 18-year-old girl from Leicester, England. The procurator fiscal depute said: “On May 16, 2019, the victim was within her home address when she received a telephone call from an unknown caller who reported to be calling from her bank. “The victim was told that there was a number of suspicious transactions and as such, she was required to transfer funds to what was described as a ‘safe account’. “She was provided with a sort code and an account number to transfer funds to, which was a total of £8,100. This money was transferred into the accused’s bank account.”
