Connecticut has a state animal, insect and even a polka dance. Now the legislature may finally give apizza the respect it deserves.
A pair of state legislators from New Haven have proposed a bill recognizing the contribution of apizza to Connecticut’s culture and economy.
Food writer Colin Caplan, author of “Pizza in New Haven,” has started a petition to garner support for the legislation.

Apizza has been the rage in Connecticut since it was introduced in 1925. You might be asking, what is apizza? This pizza style refers to a thin, chewy, crispy and charred crust made in coal-fired ovens.
The Proposed House Bill 5656 to make pizza the official food of Connecticut has been drafted by Rep. Patricia Dillon and Sen. Gary Winfield and has been submitted for the 2021 legislative session, and it s one sentence long:
To recognize the contribution of pizza to the state s cuisine and economy.

State Rep. Patricia Dillon, who represents New Haven, and State Senator Gary Winfield, who represents New Haven and West Haven, have proposed adding pizza as the state food to chapter 33 of the general statutes, “(t)o recognize the contribution of pizza to the state s cuisine and economy.”
