Emotions have been running high among neighbors of the Lake Davis-Greenwood community in Orlando after a petition was signed to designate it a historic district.
“My biggest concern is that I am now vesting the city with the authority to make decisions that I can make today and I’m doing that without any benefit,” Williams Vanos, a 14-year resident of the neighborhood said. “Where is the benefit? And we have been provided with a half dozen reasons none of which really amount to anything. Reasons we’ve been given don’t really apply to this neighborhood.”
Former Orlando mayors Glenda Hood and Bill Frederick write that more public funds are needed to buy a parcel of land at the southwest corner of Lake Eola.
A national research group is calling for expanded effort to lessen risks of leaded airplane gas even as Orlando's downtown airport is seeing a jump in flight activity. The group is the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which looked for ways to address the hazards of lead in aviation gas, which is the nation's biggest source of lead pollution.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Nearly 100 needy children in Orlando will have a big Christmas present coming their way all thanks to generous donors and the City of Orlando firefighters putting them all together.
Inside the big red Orlando fire station, Santa’s helpers are hard at work. It’s an assembly line of firefighters putting in a full day’s work to put together 96 bicycles for kids.
“Growing up we always wanted a bike,” Chief Benjamin Barksdale said. “That was the big gift and for us to be able to provide that big gift and see that reaction – it feels good.”
