The Baxter City Council found itself in a divide after a split vote over whether to grant a bypass lane variance to Four Seasons Car Wash for a new car wash.

BAXTER Both drivers involved in a two-vehicle crash Thursday, March 4, at the intersection of Clearwater Road and Golf Course Drive in Baxter were injured.
The Baxter Police Department responded to the crash at 2:12 p.m. Police reported a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Christine S. Phillips, 25, Bemidji, failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection and struck a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Gretchen M. Ness, 45, Brainerd. Phillips and Ness were both transported by North Memorial Health Ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.

The Crosslake City Council agreed to hire a third party to investigate a “city respectful workplace” complaint.
The council met Friday morning, Jan. 29, and hired attorney Stacy Johnston, of Duluth, at $270 per hour. The meeting was held at city hall with council member Dave Schrupp attending online via Zoom.
“We’ve got to hire someone to come in and find out what’s going on,” Mayor Dave Nevin said, noting Johnston will not work in the capacity of an attorney, but rather as a mediator.
Brainerd man suffers burns in Wise Road house fire

A rural Brainerd man was flown to a metro hospital early Saturday, Jan. 23, after suffering burns in a fire at his Wise Road mobile home.
Thomas Phillips, 55, was transported by ambulance to Essentia-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd and later flown to Hennepin Healthcare hospital in Minneapolis by air ambulance. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office reported Phillips, who was outside the home when emergency personnel arrived, suffered burns. It was unknown whether he suffered other injuries as a result of the fire. Hospital officials listed Phillips in satisfactory condition Sunday afternoon.
