Judge denies woman s request to return to boyfriend who shot her

Photo: Anthony Wayne Thurman An argument between boyfriend and girlfriend turned violent on Dec. 1 when the man fired at the woman with a shotgun. Thirty-five-year-old Anthony Wayne Thurman appeared during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday and entered a not guilty plea to the charges against him stemming from the incident. He also asked Circuit Judge John Putman to lift the no contact order put in place after the incident to keep the couple apart. The judge denied the request. Thurman is charged with first-degree domestic battery and being a felon in possession of a firearm. During the investigation, it was determined Thurman had a felony conviction on his record from Missouri.

(KAIT) - The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man found dead inside a burned car. The sheriff’s office said the Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s Office in Little Rock identified the victim as 35-year-old Cody Benjamin Stradford of Mountain Home. Stradford’s parents filed a missing person report earlier this month, which indicated he had not been seen or heard from in several days. Law enforcement with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI arrested the fourth person in connection to Stradford’s death.

Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says the three charged are 27-year-old Ryan James Lindsey, 38-year-old Skylar Whitney Brazil and 42-year-old Allison June Beckham Cunningham, all of Mountain Home. Montgomery says about 10 Wednesday morning, deputies responded to a 911 call and located a vehicle just off Old Arkana Road and what appeared to be human remains inside. Montgomery says it appears the vehicle had been there for several days.

Whaples back in custody after failing to appear in court

Photo: Stephan Richard Whaples Authorities responding to a residence on County Road 27 in Baxter County nabbed a well-known fugitive from justice Wednesday afternoon. Stephan Richard Whaples was arrested after almost a month on the lam, after he failed to appear in Baxter County Circuit Court. Deputies from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office were investigating an Arkansas Game & Fish Violation, when they arrived as the County Road 27 location and noticed a man in the yard, who they quickly recognized as Whaples, according to Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery. Whaples has a lengthy history of fleeing from law enforcement dating back to 2011, when he was the subject of four manhunts in less than a year. Montgomery says the deputies took quick action to arrest Whaples, and he was taken into custody without incident. The suspect authorities were searching for was not located at the property.

Man imprisoned on sex charges has upcoming parole hearing

Photo: Jeremiah Wayne Selfridge A Mountain Home man who pled guilty to having sex with a close female relative and was sentenced to seven years in prison is due for a parole hearing Thursday. Jeremiah Wayne Selfridge was 18 at the time the charges were brought against him in mid-March 2016 following an investigation launched when the victim filed a sexual assault report with the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 30, 2016. According to the probable cause affidavit, the incident occurred Jan. 23, 2016 at a residence along Buzzard Roost Cutoff. Selfridge was reported to have been visiting the victim’s residence. At bedtime, the victim said Selfridge asked if he could lay down on the bed with her.
