Wonder Woman 1984 has been quite the lightning rod since its release. On the one hand, there’s the epic scope, complex romance, rousing score, and positive messages. It also has an incredible cast including Gal Gadot, Kirsten Wiig, Chris Pine, and Pedro Pascal. On the other hand, some have criticized the visual effects as well the film’s numerous, and often confusing, twists and turns. While all of those things are up for debate, for us, one other point stands out as the best thing the film has going for it.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, after all, some of the greatest superpowered beings have gone through rigorous training in order to hone their abilities. However, some of the folks who emerge
just when you figure out how to lift a bus are not on the up and up. They seem like they are, at first, but over time you realize that having them as your inspiration will ruin your entire life.

We’re about two decades into an era that history will remember as That Time Humans Demanded At Least Four Comic Book Movies A Year. (I’m guessing this era will be remembered for other things, too, but I’m trying to stay positive for once.) My colleagues and I talk about comics characters pretty much every day, and those conversations lead me to mull a specific type of comic book movie: the Superhero Origin Story.
