This last year has been rough, but it has also been enlightening in some ways and forced us to regroup, rethink and relearn many things, including listening to music. For most of us, music was often a passive listening experience filled with playlists streaming into oblivion. Then suddenly, with more time and isolation on our hands, we started to listen differently, more actively or what we like to call Lucid Listening.

Samba de Maracatu (Blue Note): “On Samba de Maracatu, Chambers asserts himself more as a mallet player, particularly on the vibraphone. Throughout the album, he uses the vibraphone as the lead melodic and improvisational voice that often converses with Merritt’s piano accompaniments and solos. International concerts, music films, local shows mark the 18th event, which had to change like everything else.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic began and normal life went away, the Biamp PDX Jazz Festival took place as usual in 2020 with in-person concerts. We wrapped our last day of the 2020 festival 10 days before the COVID shutdown happened, said Nicholas Salas-Harris, the festival s artistic director. We were literally one of the only jazz festivals to go to in 2020.
Well, if anything, they had a lot of time to plan for the 2021 festival, although Salas-Harris, Executive Director Chris Doss and the whole crew entered the summer of 2020 still believing the PDX Jazz Festival would happen live again. Once it appeared live wouldn t be possible and it would have to be virtual, organizers set about trying to make the best festival possible. Out On The Coast (Basset Hound Music): “David Angel is a Los Angeles composer and arranger. He has had a rehearsal band for over 50 years. David spent many years composing and arranging for the Hollywood Film and TV world and later spent many years as a composition professor in Europe. His unique music is described as Gil Evans meets J.S. Bach. Over the years dozens of the greatest jazz musicians on the west coast have been members.The David Angel Jazz Ensemble is a Los Angeles based 13 piece jazz band, “Out on the Coast” is a TRIPLE CD set and all of the music is composed or arranged by David Angel. The style is described as “Gil Evans meets J.S.Bach” with all 13 musicians playing polyphonic lines. The band members are among the finest jazz musicians on the west coast.
