WCPN Ward 7 Cleveland City Councilman Basheer Jones was a featured speaker at the Stand in Solidarity march in the East Side neighborhood of Hough in June 2020. Cleveland City Councilman Basheer Jones joined the race for mayor Thursday, announcing his campaign to supporters from the steps of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. Jones represents Ward 7, which includes Cleveland’s Hough, Asiatown and St. Clair-Superior neighborhoods. He first won election in 2017, defeating incumbent T.J. Dow and becoming city council’s first Muslim member. At his campaign launch, Jones said he would work to improve safety, transparency and the administration’s relationship with both residents and local businesses.

So far, 13 candidates have announced their candidacy in an effort to replace Jackson, notably Cleveland Council President Kevin Kelley, who “built a strong working relationship with Mayor Jackson” and former Cleveland Councilman Zack Reed, who ran for mayor, but lost to Jackson in 2017.

By Tom Moore May 6, 2021 (Cleveland) - A new survey by Baldwin Wallace University says most of the candidates for mayor of Cleveland have a lot of work to do when it comes to getting votes, and financial support. BW s poll asked likely Cleveland voters which candidates they are familiar with. There are about a dozen declared candidates, and a few who have indicated they may run. The candidate with the most name recognition is former Mayor Dennis Kucinich, who is raising money for a possible run for the position he held in 1978 and 1979. Also high on the list of familiarity, either very or somewhat, are former Councilman Zack Reed, councilman Basheer Jones, and Council Preident Kevin Kelley. Others ranked anywhere from 66 to 91 percent in not familiar at all.

Ward 7 Councilman Basheer Jones was elected in November 2017, becoming the city s first Muslim council representative. He represents an area which includes the historic Hough district, as well as the St. Clair-Superior, Midtown and Asia Town neighborhoods. He spoke on the steps near The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections Office saying he is focused on fostering a better Cleveland and better opportunities for all. He also touched on education in the city, City hall transparency and about the efforts around Police having a relationship with residents.
