Bhavya Lal , recently appointed acting chief of staff at Nasa, is the first Indian-American to hold leadership position at the US space agency. Her role makes her responsible for the day-to-day operations of Nasa HQ and she will work with the Nasa chief and senior staff on strategy and policies. Gavin Schmidt, the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, will serve as NASA’s first senior climate advisor according to a NASA press release. This role is intended to effectively fulfill the Biden Administration’s climate science objectives for NASA.
This position was created to help fulfill the Biden administration’s push to integrate climate policy and science throughout the federal government, according to Scientific American. Gavin Schmidt is an expert in climate modeling where he has authored or co-authored over 150 research papers. He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Austin: An Austin doctor who was U.S. House candidate picked by Biden as DHS chief medical officer
An Austin physician, who was a Democratic congressional candidate last year, was selected by President JoeBiden to join his administration, according to a Thursday news release from the clinic he is leaving for his new role.
Dr. Pritesh Gandhi was appointed chief medical officer of the Department of Homeland Security, providing senior leadership on medical and public health issues, effective immediately, according to the release from People’s Community Clinic of Austin.
He will lead on issues related to natural disasters, border health, pandemic response, acts of terrorism and other human-caused disasters and serve as principal adviser to the Department of Homeland Security secretary, assistant secretary for the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office and the Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator, according to the release.

NASA has established a new position of senior climate advisor to work with the Biden administration on climate science objectives. The agency said in a Wednesday announcement that the senior climate advisor will advocate for NASA climate investments and work closely with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Office of Management and Budget.
Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Science in New York, will serve in an acting capacity until a permanent appointment is made. Schmidt has been GISS director since 2014, and his main research interest is the use of climate modeling to understand past, present, and future climate change.
