Imagine an ancient forest, disturbed only by nature since the last Ice Age. Imagine trees dating back to early colonial times. Forget California, the Adirondacks, the White Mountains this special forest is in Mount Sunapee State Park. Most folks don’t know it’s there, the best example of New Hampshire’s forest biodiversity, cited by NH’s Natural Heritage Bureau two decades ago. This exemplary natural community encompasses 484 acres. Ancient and mature forests prevent soil erosion, protect watersheds, support wildlife, resist natural damage (fire, wind, insects, flooding) and sequester CO-2 far better than young forests.

John Ripley Forbes Big Trees Forest Preserve is a beautiful and unique 30-acre Fulton County tree, plant, and wildlife sanctuary, the legacy of John Forbes, the foremost preservationist of the great outdoors in the Southeast. The Big Trees Forest Preserve is now a part of the Old-Growth Forest Network (OGFN), a national network of protected, native, publicly accessible mature forests. Big Trees is the first forest in Fulton County to receive the designation.

The board allocated grants from donor-designated and agency funds. Agency Funds are established by charitable organizations and can be endowed or non-endowed. The agency benefits from the Foundation’s professional asset management, which allows the agency’s staff and board to focus on providing services to their constituents.
Designated Funds provide annual support to the charities selected by the donor. They offer the added benefit that if the organization ceases to exist; the Foundation has the responsibility to ensure that the donor s original intent is met in seeking new suitable organizations.
