Mapleton Turkeys strut their stuff | Jane Boursaw Photo
Traverse City may have their South Airport Turkeys (although I heard recently that one may have passed away – RIP, Turkey), but here on the Old Mission Peninsula, we have our very own Mapleton Turkeys.
You can often find the Gang of Gobblers strutting about near the intersection of Center Road and Seven Hills Road – in Helen and Wayne Mumford’s yard, Nancy Heller’s field, and Dave Edmondson’s orchard. Tim counted 30 when I took this photo last week (hence, no snow at the time), and when they saw me, they all looked my way and posed for me.

Today’s installment of Old Mission History comes from my Mom’s scrapbook, which is a wealth of fascinating information about not only her life growing up in the south, but also after she married my Dad in 1946 and moved to the Old Mission Peninsula in 1947. They met at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Now in my possession are many large scrapbooks full of super-cool stuff dating back to her childhood through her school and college years to life on the OMP.
