HS2 has ramped up its efforts to explore hydrogen as a replacement for diesel power across construction sites as it works to minimise the carbon emissions of its construction operations in line with government net-zero targets.
Speaking at
CN’s Decarbonising Construction conference last week, HS2 head of environmental sciences Neil Wait said the project’s pioneering use of hydrogen to fuel generators and HGVs could help move the sector towards much wider use of the alternative fuel.
“It’s [about] getting used to using hydrogen, and proving it can work in a construction environment,” Wait said.
He added that hydrogen use in the UK has been hampered by a chicken-egg problem with lack of both supply and demand, but there was the potential to “use the Y-shape of HS2’s route to install hydrogen infrastructure across the UK”.
