Can new investments put a dent in Canadians' car dependence? | Philippine Canadian Inquirer

Canada must create more space on the road for cyclists at the expense of motorized vehicles, through new dedicated bike lanes and traffic-calming measures that slow down or exclude driving. (File photo: Ben Pham/Unsplash) Have you noticed any new bike lanes in your town or city? The federal government’s $180-billion Investing in Canada infrastructure program is channelling new funds to active transportation. The recent COVID-19 Resilience stream has further ramped up these investments, leading to a quick expansion of bike networks in particular. With this new infrastructure in place, we might ask: is this the start of a real modal shift? Are Canadians ready to expand their cycling and (with help from public transit) rely less on private cars for work, school and groceries, at least when it’s not snowing?

Such was the case for Southminster United Church in Old Ottawa South, which was in dire need of funds and was sitting on a jewel of a property on Bank Street next to the Rideau Canal. In 2015, Southminster brought in a firm called Urban Equation, the advisory arm of Windmill Developments, to explore the church

Backyard rink a labour of love for this Ottawa dad

Posted: Dec 21, 2020 4:00 AM ET | Last Updated: December 21, 2020 Trevor Stewart grew up skating on ponds and backyard rinks in Pictou, N.S. This year, he doubled the size of his rink, even installing LED lights under the ice surface.(Francis Ferland/CBC) Backyard rinks are making a big comeback this winter as more families seek out ways to keep active without straying far from home. For proof, look no further than your local hardware store. Remember this summer s shortage of trampolines, kayaks and garden seeds? Add outdoor rink (ODR) accessories such as plastic liners to the list, according to Ottawa DIY rink maven Trevor Stewart.
