Smith dropped out of Hazel Green High School at the age of 16 in 1942 as her husband went off to fight in World War II. Even without getting a degree, Smith kept education close to heart, working as a bus driver for the Madison County School Systems for more than 30 years. Her granddaughter Erin Wilson helped arrange a ceremony for Smith to get her degree. She told WAAY, She never ever mentioned regretting anything in life.
