As a freshly graduated architect, I was convinced that I wanted to contribute to a more sustainable future for the built environment. That is why I decided to pursue a master’s degree in environmental design and engineering back in 2011.
It was through this course that I became truly aware of the impact that buildings, and especially their heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, have on our global energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, focusing on measures that would improve their energy efficiency became my main interest.
After graduating, I had the great opportunity to work as a consultant in South-East Asia, which allowed me to develop my knowledge of HVAC technologies and design principles. Hawthorne Cat has promoted David K. Ness to president and CEO for all Hawthorne divisions. He succeeds his father Tee Ness, and grandfather, Tom Hawthorne, in the role of president.
A 20-year Hawthorne veteran, Ness has held various positions, including engine business manager at Hawthorne Power Systems division and vice president of sales, responsible for the San Diego and Hawaii regions. In 2015, he was promoted to chief operations officer and senior vice president.
“Hawthorne is a family-run business and I’m proud to say that I am only the third president in our 65-year history, says David Ness. At Hawthorne, our mission is to help our customers build better communities, and I look forward to the continued and new partnerships with our customers that keep our communities strong”.
During his service in the British Army, Capt. Brian Calder pulled numerous tours of duty as an explosive ordnance demolition specialist in Northern Ireland and the Middle East.
For years, Scottish-born Calder kept the tragedies he witnessed during those deployments close to his chest, steadily managing his innermost emotions.
âI was always able to control myself,â said Calder.
But in October 2018, Calderâs son, who just two weeks earlier had received his masterâs degree in criminal forensic psychology, died in a tragic accident.
âIt broke me, completely. It 100 percent broke me,â said Calder. âI was a broken man.â
Calder, a 23-year veteran, tried to put on a brave face for family and friends, but the loss of his son was too much for him to bear.
