₹1 crore compensation sought
Relatives and members of various Dalit outfits blocked the road in front of Palayamkottai Central Prison on Friday protesting the killing of a remand prisoner on the jail premises on Thursday by a few inmates and demanding registration of a murder case against prison authorities for failing to save him.
When P. Muthu Mano of Vagaikulam near Moontradaippu in the district, who was arrested on April 8 along with three of his associates for an attempt to murder two brothers from another community near Kalakkad, was brought to Palayamkottai Central Prison along with his accomplices from Srivaikundam sub-jail, he was attacked by a group of inmates.

P. Muthu Mano, 27, of Vaagaikulam near Moontradaippu, and his associates A. Chandrasekar, 22, of Pottaiyadi, S. Kannan, 23, of Bethania, M. Murugesan, 19, of Pottaiyadi, were arrested on April 8 last for allegedly attempting to murder a boy near Panagudi and his elder brother near Kalakkad after the boy’s girlfriend asked the duo come to the spot with ₹25,000. The police seized country-made bombs and four machetes from them. After being remanded in judicial custody, they were lodged in Srivaikundam sub-jail from where they were shifted to the Palayamkottai Central Prison on Thursday. While Muthu Mano died, others received treatment in the prison hospital.

A history-sheeter, who was arrested recently along with his accomplices was beaten to death by a few prisoners in Palayamkottai Central Prison where he had been lodged.
Sources said P. Muthu Mano, 27, of Vaagaikulam near Moontradaippu, and his associates were arrested on April 8 last for allegedly attempting to murder an 18-year-old youth and his elder brother.
The police also seized country-made bombs and four machetes from them. After being remanded in judicial custody, they were lodged in Srivaikundam sub-jail from where they were shifted to the Palayamkottai Central Prison on Thursday. Even as they were being sent to their cells, a group of prisoners allegedly attacked the gang. Muthu Mano suffered severe blood loss and died around 7.30 p.m.
