Group of Louisiana House Republicans revive invitation-only Conservative Caucus

Group of Louisiana House Republicans revive invitation-only Conservative Caucus View Comments A group of more than 30 Louisiana House Republicans have revived The Conservative Caucus and elected as its chairman Rep. Jack McFarland, who said the new group was needed because the GOP Caucus has become unwieldly. Among the members is Chalmette Rep. Ray Garofalo, whose controversial comments about slavery cost him his chairmanship on the House Education Committee and caused a rift with Republican House Speaker Clay Schexnayder of Gonzales. McFarland, a second term lawmaker from Winnfield, emphasized that the invitation-only caucus remains supportive of Republican House Speaker Clay Schexnayder of Gonzales and the House GOP Caucus led by Chair Blake Miguez of Erath.

But Miguez wasn’t among the members invited to join. McFarland says a full list of members will be released at some point today.  “We’re here to support the speaker and the Republican delegation, but the delegation has grown so large it’s more difficult to manage and it has naturally broken up into different factions,” McFarland says.

Missouri Medicaid funding imperiled after Senate abruptly adjourns on chaotic final day

Missouri Medicaid funding imperiled after Senate abruptly adjourns on chaotic final day Jonathan Shorman and Jeanne Kuang, The Kansas City Star May 14 JEFFERSON CITY The Missouri Senate abruptly adjourned Friday afternoon in the final hours of the legislative session, killing an array of measures and imperiling a tax key to funding the state s Medicaid program. Senators voted to adjourn after Democrats held off legislative business for hours, angry over what they described as a betrayal by Republican leaders on a deal to renew a tax on medical providers that generates billions each year to power Medicaid. The fight over the tax began in March over an attempt by the Senate s Conservative Caucus to block Medicaid from covering certain birth control methods. The conflict had resurfaced over the last two months before coming to a head early Friday morning when Senate President Pro Tem Dave Schatz, a Sullivan Republican, voted in favor of the anti-abortion side.
