Kuskokwim Chums Still At Record Low, Reds Coming In Strong, Weather Makes Drying Fish Difficult

During the July 14 Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group meeting, state fishery biologist Sean Larson showed a graph representing the chum run so far this season. It was basically a flat line. “So the story remains the same for chum. It s an incredibly small run,” Larson said. It’s the smallest chum run ever recorded for the river. During the July 14 working group meeting, Larson said that the chum escapement looked to be about a quarter of what it was at this point last year, and last year was a low, late chum run. On the bright side, numbers for sockeye, or red, salmon have been strong this year. Working group member Barbara Carlson provided this fishing report from Sleetmute.

YRDFA To Seek Second Disaster Declaration For Yukon Fish While First Sits In Limbo

Credit Stephanie Quinn-Davidson / Yukon River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission For the second year in a row, salmon runs on the Yukon River are so low that local managers will request a state disaster declaration. King salmon numbers remain low, and summer chum numbers are the lowest on record. During the Yukon River Drainage Fisheries Association (YDFRA) meeting on June 29, the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission’s director, Stephanie Quinn-Davidson, announced plans to request a new disaster declaration this season. One was submitted last year that was led up by YRDFA and Yukon Delta Fisheries Development Association. They took the lead on disaster requests last year. The fish commission, AVCP, TCC all signed on to it. We ll be doing it again this year, said Quinn-Davidson.
