Malnutrition Deaths Worry Balaka Authorities Demographic Health Survey of 2015 - 2016 showed that stuntedness rate for Balaka was at 33 percent - internet pic A rise in deaths from severe malnutrition in Balaka district during the first quarter of the year has worried authorities calling for concerted efforts to address the problem. Balaka Principal Nutrition and HIV/Aids Officer, Lucious Njobvu, says nine under 5 children died of severe malnutrition between January and March this year, higher than one child who died same period last year 2020. Njobvu says food insecurity and shifting all efforts to Covid 19 pandemic neglecting other health challenges are some of the factors contributing to the increase.

Government contributing to councils poor performance

Malawi’s central government has been accused of contributing towards the poor performance of local governments in the country, this is according to the Malawi Local Government Association (Malga). The association’s Local Authorities Performance Assessment (LAPA) report for the 2019/2020 financial released last month established that the central Government has “ignored” the underlying causes for the poor performance of local councils. Hadrod Zeru Mkandawire, Malga acting executive director But Malga, an umbrella body for all local governments in Malawi, says it is regrettable that the central government wants to look “smarter” on the under–performance of the assessed local councils by “hiding” its shortcomings in respect of fulfilling its obligations towards the local councils.

Balaka Woman Fined K300, 000 For Scalding Her Neighbor With Hot Porridge

The First Grade Magistrate’s court in Balaka has ordered a 23 year old woman to pay a fine of K300 thousand for scalding her female neighbor with hot porridge on suspicion that she is in love affair with her husband. State prosecutor, Sub Inspector Lyson Kachikondo, told the court that Sarah Fransisco scalded the victim when attempts to discuss failed, and the victim sustained severe burns on her body and was treated as an outpatient at Balaka District Hospital. First grade magistrate Maxwell Boaz found Francisco guilty and said a K100 thousand of the fine is meant for the victim’s compensation or in default serve a 15 month jail term.

HRDC Pleased With Progress Of Drug Theft Case In Balaka

The hospital Pharmacist Ignacio Chisaka is being accused of stealing drugs at the facility. HRDC Eastern Region Coordinator Harold Kachepatsonga they intervened after communities alleged police was playing delaying tactics on the matter. Meanwhile, Balaka Police spokesperson, Felix Misomali reveals they have completed investigations and that the suspect will appear in court soon.
