Defying Teachers, Schools in Violent Chicago Neighborhoods Keep Police on Campus
CHICAGO For the new school year beginning in the fall, more Chicago public high schools are opting to remove on-campuspolice officers, a movement that gained momentum citywide last summer after the death of George Floyd.
Among about 30 high schools that retain officers, eight out of 10 are in the most violent neighborhoods on the South Side and West Side of the city, and most of their student bodies are predominantly African American.
Often at the pleading of parents who live in these neighborhoods, the local school councils voted to keep one or two police officers on campus, overcoming strong and emotional opposition from teachers and activists, who argued that on-campus officers will traumatize black youths and that students will be better served if the money is spent on social programs instead.
New Bedford Police School Resource Officers will remain in New Bedford Public Schools, Superintendent Thomas Anderson communicated at the July 12 meeting of the New Bedford School Committee. Anderson said the announcement comes after 14 months of evaluation, careful review and important input through a series of community conversations.
“Here in New Bedford our SRO program has always been a huge success. We are delighted that the school administration has decided to retain it, Police Chief Paul Oliveira said.
The timing is befitting, considering one of New Bedford Police Officer Shane Harris, the SRO at the Whaling City Jr./Sr. High School, has been chosen to receive the prestigious Regional Exceptional Service Award for the New England region by the National Association of School Resource Officers.
New Bedford Schools Will Continue School Resource Officer Program
School Resource Officers will remain in New Bedford s public schools, Superintendent Thomas Anderson announced Monday at the New Bedford School Committee public meeting.
Anderson said he decided to keep the school district s SRO program after a year-long evaluation and review of the district s disciplinary practices, which he said was conducted by the Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy, a Boston-based nonprofit.
“Based on the extensive review conducted by the district and the Rennie Center, I have concluded that at this time NBPS will retain the School Resource Officer program at multiple schools within the district,” Anderson said.
