ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Rob Hardwick, the St. Augustine Beach police chief who sailed to a decisive victory in the Republican primary in August and cruised to an easy victory without a write-in opponent in November, was sworn in Tuesday as the new sheriff of St. Johns County.
Sheriff David Shoar retired after five terms, making Hardwick the county’s first new sheriff in 16 years.

Outgoing School Board rep Julie Wade: Lessons I learned in good governance
Local elected bodies should constantly strive to improve their governance structure to improve the lives of those they serve
Julie Wade
This is an op-ed from outgoing Savannah-Chatham County School Board District 1 Representative Julie Wade. She has spend 10 years on the board and did not seek re-election earlier this year. Her term expires Jan. 1, 2021.
Public service is an American institution and hallmark of democracy, where normal citizens can serve their community through local elected office. I was relatively new to Savannah, a lawyer and mom of three young children, when I signed up to run for the Board of Education for Savannah Chatham Public Schools. Now those young children are tweens and teens, and I am ending 10 years of service to our community and our public school system.

J.C. Romero
LGBT leaders were ecstatic when Dr. J.C. Romero, an openly gay educator, won a seat on the Orleans Parish School Board last Saturday. Romero defeated two-term board member Leslie Ellison, who frequently spoke out against gay rights. LGBT community members believe they will not achieve “full citizenship” until gay candidates are elected to the Louisiana Legislature and the New Orleans City Council.
Chief of staff at Einstein Charter Schools and adjunct professor at Delgado Community College, Romero is the city’s third gay-identified elected school official, following in the footsteps of two former Orleans Parish School Board presidents Thomas Robichaux and Seth Bloom. Robichaux and other LGBT attorneys provided free services on Romero’s behalf.
