Calls for learner rotation system to stay in place

Cape Town - The Educators Union of SA (Eusa) has called for the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to permanently adopt an adjusted learner rotation system and reject suggestions to return classrooms to full capacity.
Union spokesperson Kabelo Mahlobogwane said the proposal was necessary, as the country was still under lockdown.
He said it showed that the danger of death and infections was still present, and with new cases of the Indian coronavirus strain being reported in South Africa, as well as it being winter, the department should not make any decisions yet.

Pretoria - Student bodies, teacher unions, education activists and school governing bodies have collectively condemned an incident in which a teacher was allegedly attacked and stabbed by a fellow educator at a North West school.
The education structures have also called on the Department of Education to prioritise security and access control at school premises.
The 64-year-old teacher from Tolamo Primary School at Letlhakaneng village near Brits allegedly attacked and stabbed a 47-year-old female educator at Tshefoge Primary School on Monday.
The teacher, who was allegedly stabbed multiple times on her neck and back, is in a critical condition at a North West hospital.

Cape Town - Discussions are under way by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to review and repackage the Presidential Youth Employment initiative, with a proposed second phase to start later this year.
DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said the initial duration of the programme, which started in December last year, was four months, but it was extended by one month until the end of April 2021.
He said the basic education sector created employment opportunities for more than 320 000 education and general education assistants who were placed in schools around the country.
Four classrooms and a resource centre at a school went up in smoke on Sunday.
Two people have been arrested for arson and burglary.
The Eastern Cape education department said the damage amounted to R113 477.
Two individuals, one of which is a pupil, have been arrested by the Eastern Cape police for breaking into Wilson Mayekiso Junior Secondary School in Tsomo.
They stole food which was meant to feed learners, after which the school building was set alight.
The fire destroyed four classrooms and a resource centre.
The Eastern Cape education department said the damage caused by the fire amounted to R113 477.
