Cicadas specifically Brood X  are arriving by the billions for the first time in 17 years. These insects emerge from underground for six-week lifespans, sometimes landing inside your home, and have the potential to wreak havoc on your smaller, young trees. You may also decide you don t like the look of the rising dirt mounds in your yard and beneath your plants that signal the brood s arrival.

They re coming: Where to expect periodical cicadas this spring in Ohio

Cicadas will be surfacing after spending nearly two decades underground. They will come out by the billions this spring across at least 16 states, including Ohio. In Ohio, Brood X periodical cicadas last emerged in 2004, will be coming out in concentrated areas throughout the western portion of the state, according to experts.  We expect to see the largest concentrations of these cicadas in the following counties: Defiance, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Logan and Montgomery. Brood X is one of the largest and most broadly distributed groups of periodical cicadas, stretching from Georgia to New York and reaching as far west as the Mississippi River, according to a statement from Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA).
