Vikings Extend Streak To 15 With Sweep Of Saints

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com) – The Valley City State softball team tallied 30 hits Sunday and outscored Presentation College 33-1 in the Senior Day doubleheader sweep. Valley City State outscored the Saints 54-1 in the four-game series sweep over the weekend. All four games were decided by mercy rule and strong pitching from seniors Amber Stewart and Emily Smith allowed just one run on six hits throughout the weekend. The Vikings smashed six home runs Sunday – including three from junior Jessica Husband – to and extend VCSU’s winning streak to 15 games. Valley City State finishes the regular season with a 32-5 overall record and a 25-2 conference record. Presentation finishes the season with a 7-32 record overall and a 6-21 record in the NSAA.

Weitkum Sets School Record In Steeplechase

Weitkum finished the 3000 meter steeplechase in a school-record time of 12:25.05, shattering the previous record of 13:01.02 set by Kristina Fricke in 2019. Weitkum’s record time was good for sixth place at the Ron Masanz Meet, which featured competitors from several NCAA Division I and II schools. Weitkum’s time ranks her first in the NSAA this season by 42 seconds. This is the 10th school record set by the VCSU track & field teams in 2021. Zachary Co bested a field of 33 competitors to win the men’s shot put on Saturday. His winning mark of 16.93 meters (55’6.5″) was just off his personal best throw last week. Co also added a fourth-place finish in the discus.

Vikings Clinch NSAA Title With Sweep

MAYVILLE, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com) – Valley City State University clinched its second straight NSAA Softball Conference Championship on Wednesday with a pair of victories at Mayville State. The Vikings defeated the Comets 6-0 and 9-1 to secure the regular season conference title. With four NSAA games remaining, the Vikings are now 21-2 in conference play and lead second-place Bellevue by 4.5 games. It is VCSU’s second straight conference title, the 13 th in program history and the first under coaches Mark Mattson and Barbi Mattson. The Vikings last won the title in 2019. The 2020 conference season was canceled due to COVID-19. “We’re feeling great – everybody’s excited,” head coach Mark Mattson said after the game. “Our goal is always to win the last game of the year, but there are milestones to celebrate along the way. It’s always special to win a conference title.”

Perryman Named NSAA Player Of The Week

BISMARCK, N.D. (vcsusvikings.com) – VCSU junior Riley Perryman has been named the NSAA Softball Player of the Week after putting together an impressive stretch at the plate. Perryman batted .727 and scored eight runs over VCSU’s five games last week. She also hit four home runs and recorded a 1.818 slugging percentage. This is the second time this season that Perryman has been selected as the NSAA Softball Player of the Week. Perryman now has 11 home runs this season and is suddenly flirting with the single-season school record of 15 home runs set by Kelli Unrein in 2006. Vikings Get Two Walk Off Wins On Saturday

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com) – Valley City State University won two games in walk-off fashion on Saturday as the Viking baseball team hosted Waldorf University for a rare tripleheader. The Vikings won game one 2-1 on a walk-off two-run double from JT Reed, and then won game three 7-6 after an extra-inning walk-off sacrifice fly by David Demeter. Waldorf won game two by a score of 5-2. With the pair of wins, the Vikings are now 17-23 overall and 10-9 in conference play. Waldorf moves to 19-24 overall and 12-11 in the NSAA. Matthew Suda picked up both wins on the mound for VCSU after making two scoreless relief appearances.
