Karen Garthwait of Moab considers herself a lifelong volunteer, beginning at age three stuffing envelopes with her mom for the American Heart Association. Her dedication to public service now includes her 17 years of service to the national parks, first as a ranger at Arches National Park and now as an employee of both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.
In that position, she oversees interpretive media and assisting with their volunteer program. Karen led a litter clean up service project at Sand Dune Arch shortly before Earth Day, which yielded a surprising seven pounds of trash, made up mostly of the small stuff.
On April 27, the Centers for Disease Control released new COVID-19 safety guidelines including expanded outdoor options for small groups. Once fully vaccinated, adults can now gather outdoors unmasked, travel within the U.S. without quarantining or testing, and join limited numbers of other vaccinated people indoors without masks or distancing.
This is good news for the approaching summer as better weather will allow many to take advantage of recreational opportunities that were sorely missed last summer under necessarily tighter precautions.
Nearby outdoor recreation is abundant. Former Staffer Levels Harassment Allegations Against Utah State Senator
Former Utah legislative staffer Elizabeth Converse accused Sen. Gene Davis, D-Salt Lake City, of sexual harassment Wednesday night. She said one time, Davis asked her if she liked red wine and the way chocolate melted in her mouth. Converse also alleged that, while on a work trip to Chicago, Davis put his arm around my waist, pulled me close into him, and said I hear you like body shots.
