Muny Band Ready For 2021 Season

By Editor | March 17, 2021 By ERIC X. VICCARO Strike up the band. That’s the message Ste. Genevieve Municipal Band President Jimmy Donze said loud and clear last Thursday. Donze was one of two speakers to make a personal appearance before the board of aldermen during its regularly scheduled meeting. “That’s the plan,” Donze later said in a telephone interview with the Herald on Friday evening regarding whether or not there would be set performance schedule for the summer of 2021. Donze, himself a drummer and percussionist, also serves as the group’s sound technician. John Mooney, Ste. Genevieve R-II School District instrumental music instructor and a Ward 1 alderman, serves as the director.

Bieser Writes History

By ERIC X. VICCARO EVICCARO@STEGENHERALD.COM INDEPENDENCE Writing history is really nothing new for Valle Catholic High School 145-pound junior wrestler Josh Bieser. After all, back in January, Bieser became the first-ever Southeast Missouri Regional Wrestling Conference league champion for the Warriors. The stakes were indeed higher at the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 1 state meet last Wednesday at Cable Dahmer Arena. But, Bieser continued to etch his name in the Valle Catholic record books taking second place overall behind seasoned Lawson grappler Tyler Leonard in the 145-pound weight division. “It was really exciting for me to make school history and be Valle’s first state medalist,” Bieser said in an email to the

Valle Catholic Has Succeded In Providing Live Classes, Array Of Activities

By Editor | March 17, 2021 By Mark Evans mevans@stegenherald.com Other than two short periods in November and the mid-February snow storms, Valle Catholic Schools have done something not many schools have managed to do this school year. They have offered five days a week of live education since school opened on August 20. High school principal Greg Miller said that students have been very happy to stay in the classroom, rather than going virtual. “One of the surprising things about the first semester was the number of students who were devastated when they had to enter a quarantine period due to close-contact,” Miller said. “Students did not like the Spring Lockdown period of 2020. They prefer to be here, with friends, faculty, and coaches that care.”

Mueller Goes Over Changing Vaccine Policies With Commission

By Editor | March 10, 2021 By MARK EVANS Ste. Genevieve County is holding its own amid the changing landscape of COVID-19 vaccinations. Jennifer Mueller, administrator of the county health department, reported to the County Commission last Thursday that 16 percent of county residents had received at least their first vaccine shot. She called the figure “really, really good.” The county ranks 18th among 116 Missouri counties in vaccinations. Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson asked whether the 16 percent figure reflected just what the local health department had given out. Mueller said it included residents who got their shots out of the county. “We finished up our second-round clinic this week,” Mueller said. “It went really well.”
