River St duplication hits milestone

Premium Content Subscriber only Ballina Shire Council will be laying asphalt pavement to the westbound lane between Quays Drive and Burns Point Ferry Road, West Ballina, on Monday April 12, weather dependent. The works are part of the River Street Duplication project. The water-filled barriers currently in place will be removed from 6am Monday, before the peak traffic period Traffic control will be in place during these works. At times, traffic control will detour light vehicles via Quays Drive, Kalinga Street and Burns Point Ferry Road. Heavy vehicles will be stopped for a minimal amount of time before the Quays Drive roundabout, when the asphalt truck requires full access to the westbound lane.

Weave your way into this citizen science project

Premium Content Subscriber only Families and visitors of the Ballina Shire have been invited to be a part of a Citizen Science workshop series and try their hand at weaving. In a special family focused school holiday program, local weavers Tania Marlowe and Deb Cole from Jugan Dandii will teach hand weaving techniques and riverside Nyangbal yarns. Participants will learn about introduced and natural fibres of the local area and how they can be prepared and used to make a small sample fish trap. Tania and Deb will demonstrate and use a variety of local endemic and native fibres, with some introduced fibres, to adapt to a contemporary version of a fish trap or small sample fish trap woven form.

$70K for two community hall upgrades

Premium Content Grants for $70,000 will support upgrades for two Northern Rivers community halls. Wardell and Pimlico Halls need to make improvements to their facilities to make them safer and compliant with building standards. Page MP Kevin Hogan highlighted the importance of the upgrades. “This funding will allow for various repairs and improvements at Pimlico Hall, including new handrails on the ramps, upgraded door, interior and exterior repainting, and accessible parking and pathways,” Mr Hogan said.
