Early Tuesday morning the blaring of fire engine sirens and sound of choppers in the sky were heard in Cape Town, as fresh crews were deployed to fight the wildfire on Table Mountain, which is “largely contained” on its third consecutive day, according to the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services.

Three weeks ago, a community on the slopes of Devil’s Peak had a fire drill. Two weeks ago, they went on high alert as the city dried out. On Monday morning, the raging mountain fire, which ignited 24 hours earlier, leapt within 30 metres of their homes but their efforts together with the city’s firefighters helped save them.
Nazeem Ebrahim, an elderly member of University Estate, said: “I have lived in this community for more than 55 years. The firefighters and emergency services play an important role, but we are used to looking after ourselves.

By lunchtime on Monday, smoke made it difficult to see and ash was swirling down in Vredehoek and University Estate in Cape Town, below the hot spots on Table Mountain where fires were burning out of control more than 24 hours after they ignited.

CAPE TOWN/JOHANNESBURG - Despite windy conditions, the Table Mountain fire has been contained.
More than 150 firefighters, more volunteers and over 30 firefighting appliances remain on the ground to monitor flare ups.
Aerial support has been grounded due to the windy conditions.
Officials held a media briefing at the Roeland Street Fire Station earlier on Monday.
