The Hillsborough County Health Department will provide testing to the community around Gopher Resource, a lead smelter operating near an elementary school in Tampa.
The announcement was made Wednesday evening during a town hall held at Kenly Park and organized by Hillsborough County Commissioner Gwen Myers. Dozens of community members, government officials and some workers gathered around the basketball court to hear from officials about the health effects of lead on children, ways to prevent exposure and the amount of lead in the community’s air.
The health department said testing for children will occur at the park on May 1 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Five years after becoming dean of the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, Scott DeRue has announced that he will step down in May.
In an email sent to the Ross community, DeRue said he would take a senior executive position in the private sector and described his time at Ross as “the greatest professional honor of my life.”
During his time at Ross, DeRue oversaw a variety of program changes, from adding a STEM track to the school’s MBA program to the creation of new master’s programs.
According to Poets & Quants, Ross was the only school to have every one of its specialized programs rank in US News’s rankings this year.

Shannon Kelly tried to catch her breath, but her hacking cough wouldn’t allow it.
”I had every single symptom except for a fever,” she said. “I mean, I have shortness of breath. I’ve been in bed. I’ve been sleeping. My cough is terrible.”
The normally healthy 25-year-old struggled to speak Tuesday from her bedroom at her parents’ home in Tabernacle. After being sick for about a week, Kelly learned on April 10 that she has COVID-19.
