During the pandemic, the retired nurse’s aid in San Antonio has made more than a dozen dollhouse-scale models out of hundreds of toothpicks, barbecue skewers and Popsicle sticks, which she picks up at the neighborhood dollar store.

Any time that composer and violinist Darian Donovan Thomas takes on a project whether it’s premiering a new work he’s created or touring with acclaimed singer-songwriter Moses Sumney he tries to work with people he likes.
“I kind of make it a rule to not work with people I’m not friends with,” said Thomas, 27, a San Antonio native who now lives in New York. “Even if it means losing out on money and stuff like that, I’m fine with that. Because I would just rather work with people I know and who know me, and work with people where I know the energy in the room will be right so that we can all push further.�
