Stars and Stripes - US drops cases against five researchers accused of hiding ties to Chinese military

US drops cases against five researchers accused of hiding ties to Chinese military by   The Justice Department announced last July charges against Juan Tang and three other scientists living in the U.S., saying they lied about their status as members of China’s People’s Liberation Army. (Department of Justice) WASHINGTON The Justice Department this week dropped prosecutions of five foreign researchers accused of concealing ties to China’s military and who were arrested last year in a highly publicized sweep against alleged Chinese spying in the United States. The moves came as one defendant, cancer researcher Tang Juan, was scheduled to stand trial on Monday in the Eastern District of California on charges of visa fraud. A court on Friday granted the department’s motion to dismiss her case. Motions to dismiss are pending in the other four.

Quinn on Nutrition: What's true about cows and global warming | Nutrition

I keep coming upon this statistic that states livestock are responsible for 14.5% of global gas emissions. Some designate ruminant animals — cows, sheep and goats — as the biggest contributors to greenhouse gases. Others then go on to offer a solution: Switch from beef and lamb to chicken and pork … and consume fewer dairy products. Not everyone agrees with that conclusion, including Dr. Frank Mitloehner, professor and air quality expert at the University of California at Davis. “Forgoing meat is not the environmental panacea many would have us believe,” he states. Here are some of his reasons. It’s true that around the world, cattle are the No. 1 agricultural source of greenhouse gases, says Mitloehner. That’s where the prevailing statistic of 14.5% emissions from cattle comes from.
