Quint s Top 20: A Year For Mid-Majors To Break Through

Monday March 8th, 2021 8:45am (Inside Lacrosse Photo: James Beaver) It was a weekend of little change. Loyola, Ohio State and Richmond were the only Top 20 teams to meet defeat. We have a lot to look forward to this week, and many of the best games are on television. Wednesday High Point is at Duke. Thursday Night Lacrosse debuts on the ACC Network with Virginia and North Carolina. On Saturday, Hopkins hosts Penn State, then Rutgers and Maryland play for first place in the Big Ten. Sunday, fans will be treated to Ohio State and Michigan. Why are there so many football score blowouts this season? I think there are less ‘middle tier’ teams with the Ivy sitting out 2021 and the power programs extended their lead by securing high-profile transfers, furthering the gap.  This year offers an opportunity for mid-major programs to attract more attention, to put themselves in the Top 20 and push toward the Tournament.

Saturday Recap: Syracuse Holds off Vermont, Maryland Runs Past Johns Hopkins

(Photo Courtesy of Syracuse Athletics) After taking down ACC rival Virginia Cavaliers by ten goals last week, the Syracuse Orange had to hold off a feisty Vermont Catamounts squad. The Catamounts dominated the faceoff dot with Tommy Burke going 24-for-34 (70%) on the day. They also won the ground ball battle (42-29) and went 20-for-22 in the clearing game while Syracuse went 23-for-28. Vermont also outshot Syracuse 55-32 and put 33 of their shots on cage. Syracuse put 29 shots on cage. Despite the edge that the Catamounts were able to gain throughout the course of the game, the Orange prevailed and secure the 17-13 victory. Stephen Rehfuss led the Syracuse offense with eight points (2G/6A) while Owen Hiltz had four goals and one assist. Drake Porter made 20 saves with a 60% save percentage.

Men s Lacrosse: Penn State Mauls Buckeyes, 15-13

When Ohio State had the opportunity to right the ship and get back on course, they instead steered directly into an iceberg. Defense has absolutely gone AWOL, at every level, and it cost Ohio State again. I don t know what they re waiting for, but it s time for fresh blood. Penn State came into the contest shooting just 21%. Ohio State s sieve defense allowed Penn State to shoot 35% on the day. The Bucks also allowed Penn State to have double digit shots in every quarter except the last, where they gave up 9. Penn State got career days from TJ Malone, who had 5 goals. The middies for Penn State only had 2 goals. The starting attack had 13. Mac O Keefe scored multiple goals for the first time in 2021. The close defense has been abysmal the last two games. Completely trash. And that s being nice.
