OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) The aviation event that draws hundreds of thousands of people to Oshkosh returns this summer after the coronavirus pandemic forced organizers of EAA AirVenture to cancel last year s gathering.
Safety protocols will be front and center this year at AirVenture, billed as the world s largest fly-in convention.
EAA CEO Jack Pelton says the arrival of vaccines will help return the crowds to Wittman Regional Airport, but precautions have been planned.
Masks will be strongly recommended if attendees are unable to socially distance. Proof of a COVID-19 vaccine will not be required to attend.

The EAA Museum in Oshkosh breaks ground on a major expansion.
The Project 21 addition will include a Youth Education Center and a Pilot Proficiency Center.
Chairman Jack Pelton says this grew from a simple idea.
“While the EAA Aviation Museum highlights more than a century of accomplishments in personal flight, a major part of EAA’s mission to grow participation in aviation is to offer high-level programming for current and future pilots,” said Pelton. “Project 21 brings that vision to reality, and further strengthens Oshkosh as the home for those who pursue their dreams of flight.”
EAA hopes the new facilities will make Oshkosh the premier aviation education and training destination in the US.

In the depths of the 2008 downturn I think it was probably 2009 something Jack Pelton, then CEO of Cessna, said at NBAA stuck with me. New aircraft sales had taken a nauseating plunge and bizjet inventories were as high as they had been in years. It wasn’t that nothing was selling, but not much was selling. Never mind that, Pelton said, the company would stay on the gas with new products so as to be ready when the market turned upward again. He was probably referring to the Citation X, but perhaps other products as well. The market never really took a sharp upward turn, but a decade later, it has recovered after a fashion.
