Chinese Ditch Flying (and Blind Dates) in Blow to Airlines Bloomberg 8/02/2021 Bloomberg News
(Bloomberg) Lunar New Year is usually a bonanza for Chinese airlines criss-crossing the country fully loaded with passengers. Not this year though, after the government took the rare step of encouraging people to stay at home as it tries to stamp out the coronavirus.
Chunyun, as the Lunar New Year travel season in China is known, is regarded as the world’s biggest annual human migration and can account for as much as a quarter of airlines’ annual profits, according to BloombergNEF analyst Luxi Hong.
The holiday this year falls on Feb. 11-17, but the travel period in China started in late January and runs to March. On Jan. 28, passenger traffic was 71% lower than the first official travel day in 2020, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of China. Ticket bookings for trains, normally packed, are almost 60% lower than usual, the railway authority said.

LAWRENCE This spring, 41 KU students will receive an Undergraduate Research Award. UGRA recipients are awarded a $1,000 scholarship as they work on mentored research and creative projects.
Students apply for UGRAs by writing a four-page research proposal under the guidance of a mentor. Faculty reviewers evaluate the applications based on the merit of the applicant s proposal and a recommendation from the mentor.
“Undergraduate research allows students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world problems, and experiential learning opportunities like these add richness to their educational journey at KU,” said Alison Olcott, director of the Center for Undergraduate Research and associate professor of geology.
Business by Sarah Sharples 25th Jan 2021 7:13 PM Giants like Uber, Airbnb, Snapchat and Pinterest have been part of the unicorn club for years - where a private company is valued in the billions - but there are only three Aussie companies that boast a spot on the list, with a new one sliding into the exclusive group last year. The big hitter on the Aussie side is digital graphic business Canva, which is now worth $6 billion, but was started by founder Melanie Perkins in her mother s Perth loungeroom in 2013. It has 30 million users in 190 countries. Next up is payment transfers provider Airwallex, which is worth a reported $1.8 billion.

The Food and Drug Administration as approved the first generic of a drug used to treat severe hypoglycemia. The agency has approved a generic glucagon for injection, 1 mg, from Amphastar Pharmaceuticals. The generic is a synthetic peptide product that the FDA has deemed to be bioequivalent and thus therapeutically equivalent to Eli Lilly’s Glucagon Emergency Kit for Low Blood Sugar. Glucagon for injection has been approved for use in the U.S. for more than 20 years, but until today, there has been no approved generic of this important drug that can save the lives of people who may experience the serious condition of very low blood sugar, said Sally Choe, director of the Office of Generic Drugs in FDA s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Today s approval reflects the FDA s continued commitment to advancing patient access to lower-cost, high-quality generic drug products that are as safe and effective as their brand name counterparts.
