Lobos Take Down Wolverines After a Six-Run Sixth Inning
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. It was a slow start for The University of New Mexico baseball team as the Lobos trailed after five innings to the Utah Valley Wolverines (9-40, 7-25 WAC), but the Lobos built a lead after a six-run sixth inning that that would carry them to a 9-4 final score. Willie Cano played a big hand in tonight’s win, going three-for-four from the plate with three RBI’s and two runs, including a home run in the third inning.
“Willie Cano was special tonight,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “We had both great defense and great hitting.”
USAFA, Colo. The University of New Mexico baseball team delivered three home runs in three innings, but it was not enough to change the momentum of the game and ultimately fell 3-10 to Air Force. The Lobos (9-23, 6-15 MW) split the series 3-3 after sweeping the Falcons (20-18, 12-12 MW) earlier this season at home.
“These boys have been on the road 75 percent of the season and in COVID quarantine for almost 70 days, not including the four months back home in between during the height of COVID,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “It will be good to play at home.”
USAFA, Colo. Despite posting 16 runs on 22 hits through two games, The University of New Mexico baseball team was edged out twice by Air Force in a doubleheader on Saturday. In game one, the Lobos (9-22, 6-14 MW) kept it close with the Falcons (19-18, 11-12) and led the game through two innings before dropping 4-6. The Lobos played catchup in game two but made it a three-run game in the ninth inning, but the comeback was not enough as they fell 12-15.
“In game one, our defense killed us,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “Then, in game two, our pitching was poor.”

SEATTLE, Wash. Will Simpson’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth allowed Washington to escape with a 3-2 victory, giving the Huskies two of three in a quickly put-together three-game series in Seattle. The Lobos, who lost the opener 4-3 in 10 before winning last night 5-3 in 12 innings, now head home before traveling to Texas Tech for a single game on Wednesday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park.
The loss dropped UNM to 9-16 while Washington improved to 17-18.
“These kids battle their butts off and just need a break,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “Washington came off of beating UCLA in a series and we had our chances to take this one. Not an easy week for us as Texas Tech is loaded and then we get back home for Fresno State. We have to keep fighting.”
